Dana Maltby , also known us TCB (Twin Cities Brightest) is alight painting photographer and he’s one of the most known highly respected light painting artist. Dana creates images on daily basis and is one of the most creative individuals in the light painting world. Usually the equipment that he use to produce his work is a camera, a tripod, lights and beer. He’s usually breaks in abandon buildings to photo shoot and the only difficulty’s that his facing with light photography is to centering the camera in a perfectly round tunnel.
Dana has created he’s own tools and techniques for light painting photography and he likes to shoot in tunnels,caves, abandon buildings and basements. He actually discovered light painting while he was following one of his other passion “Urban Exploration” and he produce he’s first light painting photograph.
He done his education at Barnerors of fine Art, Graphic Design from CVA the College of Visual Art at St Paul Minnesota. An has been a photographer for the past 8 years and shooting non stop since he learn about light photography for the past 3 years. Normally he gets influence from movies, series and videos, but he gets he’s influence from Cindi Lapp-Pro and Ectro Kidos.
Prefers to work with Digital photography, because light painting photography is a long exposure photograph with light movement or a surface painting. Always has different outcomes and with a digital camera you can see all the different results and use again the same technique so he can choose the right one.
He prefers to shoot alone but some time he shoot with his roommate Jake Scari and one of his friends Mike Greenwell. He does light painting photography with natural light and he captures the light through holes, broken windows, between gaps or any surface the light pounding.
What i like more from Dana’s work is hοw abstracting his photographs are by only using lights or only natural light, the composition and the contrast of the images he produce are unique, because to produce them he uses he’s own techniques of light painting. OF my perspective Dana produce work in a very chill vibe he actually enjoy’s what his doing without getting stress if it goes wrong or if he will get cough, he actually having fun with it and that makes his work more productive with a nice outcome always. The outcome he has every time of producing painting with lights photographs, and how he choose the composition and contrast of the image is really inspirational, to learn how to use new techniques and don’t be afraid to try new ways producing a piece of work, is inspiring for a lot of young photographers like me. He also has produce a small amount of work of shadow photography, again using different equipment of lights, and through this work he have gave me new ideas for my future work. He likes to think his photography as magic, like he’s the magician of light photography, that his creating a supernatural world of light painting photography. He makes you feel that photography is fun which it should be if it is something you love doing.
